Sky is High Vol.1: an introduction to Yunnan music

The cover for the compilation Sky is high vol.1 by Sea of Wood Records. The cover depicts stylised versions of four flowers, all based on Yunnan's ethnic cultures, and specifically those from which the music originates. There are two borrowing from the Yi, one Bulang, and one from the Wa people.
Sky is High, Vol. 1 was released on Spotify just as WOMEX 24 began on October 24th. 
It is a compilation of some of our most accessible tunes from a number of great albums released over he years and an entry point that could lead further down the Yunnan rabbit hole!
The cover designed for Puman's Bulang Beauty track on the compilation Sky is high vol.1 by Sea of Wood Records. There are several flowers and elements present in traditional Bulang culture, often found in clothing patterns from that specific area of the South of Yunnan province.
 
Featuring 16 tracks from the bands Mei-Rok, Manhu, Shanren, Wild Mushrooms, Bagedai and Puman this compilation is aimed to showcase some of the best of the Yunnan ethnic-crossover movement.
 
For us, having been here so long it can be difficult for us to appreciate that some of the sounds from Yunnan are just so different that it can sometimes be off-putting to first time listeners, so here we have brought together a collection of great, accessible tracks for this listening demographic!
