The band EMP is gonna play here. EMP are an Alternative Rock band based in the provincial capital of Yunnan, South-Western China. As the once-rich Chinese ‘underground scene’ toboggans dizzyingly towards the precipice of irrelevance, EMP present an image of what they feel Chinese ‘Yaogun’ (rock) should have been. Rooted in the 90’s grunge sound, the band rails against the insincerity, plain dullness, and growing oppressiveness of the post Covid era in China. Xiao Bai’s (Lead Vocals) raw and tortured vocals bite through Kandao’s (Lead guitarist) heavy Soundgarden-style guitar riffs, with Alice in Chains-reminiscent vocal harmonies gelling a sonic wall of rage and frustration.
